NASA Releases Atlantis' Booster Cameras Video

NASA this morning released the videos of Atlantis STS-125 climb to orbit from the prospective of her rocket boosters, and we like most thought it was incredible.

Atlantis lifted-off on Monday, May 11th. We captured a few still images from the different views and find them amazing. The yellow number at the top is seconds into the launch phase nearly nine days ago.

At 39 seconds into Atlantis' launch on May 11, you can see shadow of her smoke pillar from the solid rocket boosters stretch out over the Atlantic Ocean. The coastline of Cape Canaveral - America's Spaceport - is also visible in this shot from the right hand booster.

Nine seconds later, the left booster camera shows the Kennedy Space Center as Atlantis throttle's down her main engines.

ATLANTIS STS-125: The IMAX Movie

The IMAX film makers who brought America and the world The Dream is Alive and Blue Planet are currently working on a new movie of the upcoming final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope next month.

As the crew of Atla
ntis trains for mission STS-125 to repair and service America's eye on the universe, the IMAX team is there with the flight crew of seven astronauts - even in the huge pool at the Johnson Space Center near Houston - as they practice their mid-May work on Hubble.

"(We) completed our final practice for spacewalk 2 in the big pool, huge IMAX camera was in the pool with us filming a 3D movie. (A) really fun day
", STS-125 mission specialist and spacewalker Mike Massimino (below, on right with crew mate Mike Good) told SpaceLaunchNews.com via Twitter on Friday morning.

Atlantis's flight will be the last manned spaceflight for the next six to eight years which will fly higher than 300 statue miles. That alone will give the newer IMAX cameras a great view of the earth from the higher orbital altitude, with the space telescope resting in Atlantis' cargo bay.

"I
had the Hubble Space Telescope team and the IMAX underwater film crew over at the house for dinner (tonight). Lots of great space and shark stories..." Mike stated late on Saturday evening.

Over the last twenty-five years, IMAX cameras have flown on several space shuttle missions and to the international space station. These films yielded beautiful video shots which are so impressive on the fifty-foot screens located at several NASA centers. IMAX has recently begun transfering several of their older films onto Blu-Ray as high def televisions and players become more common place on the dawn of the second decade of the 21st century.

Atlantis' crew includes commander Scott Altman, pilot
Gregory C. Johnson, and mission specialists Massimino, Mike Good, K. Megan McArthur, John Grunsfeld and Andrew Feustel.

The movie, maybe titled "Return to Hubble", will get it's premire at the Kennedy Space Center late this year or early 2010. You can watch the filming beginning on May 12th with the launch of Atlantis right here via SpaceLaunch News - LIVE!

New HD Images of Space Station Downlinked

Discovery sent down some high def video from this afternoon's space station fly around moments ago, beginning at 6:40 pm EDT. What a beautiful view as the station [and Discovery] sailed 228 miles over the southern Pacific Ocean and northeastward over the Gulf of Mexico, the southeastern United States and over the north Atlantic.

Space Station Crew to walk in Space Today

International space station commander Mike Fincke and flight engineer Yury Lonchakov will spend six hours outside of the orbiting outpost this afternoon to install a European science experiment and perform some housekeeping chores.

The year's first spacewalk should start at about 12:20 pm EDT, today.

Lonchakov [EV 1] will suitup into the Russian Orlan spacesuit with the blue stripes; while Fincke [EV 2] will wear the red striped Orlan suit. Once outside, the pair will setup a work platform to assist them in the installation of the EXPOSE-R, a European experiment which will expose seeds and spores to the space environment. A spacewalk to install EXPOSE-R on Dec. 23 ran into difficulties during the installation.

SpaceLaunchNews.com will have LIVE coverage on our Home page of the spacewalk beginning at 12 noon EDT.

Meanwhile inside the station, the third Expedition 18 crew member will act as the spacewalk coordinator - assisting with the robotic arm and timeline details for her companions. Sandy Magnus will help the two from inside the station. Magnus is also awaiting Discovery's docking on Friday, and will return to earth with the STS-119 crew following Discovery's departure.

While outside the station, the spacewalkers will work to secure some of the station's thermal insulation and take some detailed images of select areas of the station.

apple's iTunes Offers NASA HD & Music

As a loyal customer of apple products as of late, I currently use my apple iPhone 3G with my new iMac 20" computer for calendar, email and multimedia syncing. This allows my iPhone with 16 GB of memory to carry my computer's media files on the go.

Now take a step back from this picture, and visualize having the latest NASA high def video saved to your computer or iPhone. I have the enjoyment of watching NASA HDTV anytime I want on my iPhone via apple's iTunes.

Available to download for free [http://apple.com] on any Mac or PC, iTunes offers NASAcast and many other free NASA video clips which run several minutes each. From the latest shuttle launches and landings, to Hubble & space station updates, you can stay up to date and carry the cool video short movies with you.

iTunes has a music search at upper right of their page. As a treat, type in "Cape Canaveral" and download the cool song Cape Canaveral by Conor Oberst. This song was me during the 1990's! Every line I can relate to or saw...

Also, I put "Apollo" into iTunes music search and downloaded recently the Apollo 13 motion picture soundtrack, and several audio-only NASA Apollo launch countdown clips, too. Comment below on what you have downloaded, I'd love to find it.

Cool history embedded in my phone and to watch when I want - mine to keep.
So when your doing your Holiday shopping, think about implementing new multimedia technologies into your life.
